The Strangest Secret

The Strangest Secret

Hello, and thank you for taking a few minutes to read this short article.

In times of uncertainty and change, it’s crucial to find ideas and Primary Principles that guide and uplift us. Primary Principles are timeless truths that, when we recognize them, bring clarity, courage, and purpose.

One such principle comes from Earl Nightingale’s classic work, The Strangest Secret, first shared in 1957. His words inspired generations of thought leaders and motivational speakers, and his message is just as powerful today.

Nightingale’s goal was simple: to empower people to live lives they loved. After years of research, he found one key difference between those who thrive and those who drift:

You Become What You Think About.

Pause and let those six words settle.

The thoughts we hold most consistently shape our results—our success, our happiness, our future. Those who set clear goals and stay focused naturally move toward them. Without a guiding goal, Nightingale warned, we live like ships without rudders—drifting, stuck, or lost.

Two Kinds of Goals

There are two important types of goals:

  • Aspirational Goals: Deep, heartfelt aims that live within us, propelling us forward. (Wallace Wattles, author of The Science of Getting Rich, spoke of this too.)
  • SMART Goals: Grounded, specific goals that anchor action into physical reality.

SMART stands for:

  • S – Specific
  • M – Measurable
  • A – Attainable
  • R – Relevant to your deeper aspirations
  • T – Time-bound (linked to a clear date)

Together, these two types of goals keep us moving toward the life we truly want.

The Power of Focused Thinking

Success isn’t just about achieving titles or riches. It’s about holding a meaningful vision—and taking steps toward it, every day.

Today, with technology, dreams like working globally, building a creative career, or starting a new venture are more possible than ever.

Speak your vision in the editorial present: Not “I will have a thriving practice,” but “I have a thriving practice with 20 clients who love the work we do.”

Ask yourself:  “What desire lives quietly within me, waiting for more of my focus and faith?”

Why We Drift (And How to Stop)

Nightingale believed we drift when we let doubts crowd our minds and fail to take action.  But when we focus on something meaningful and nourish it with attention and effort, we move naturally toward success.

Try this affirmation: I’m successful at whatever I do.

Simple, powerful—and another six-word mantra to strengthen your focus.
