Tea at the Huntington Gardens this week. A small r Tea at the Huntington Gardens this week. A small round table, a tiered tray of tiny sandwiches and pastries, and two pots of tea that never seemed to run out.

There was no agenda and nowhere else we needed to be. Time with people I love, laughing over a sandwhiches, is not something to earn after the work is done. It is part of a life well lived.

πŸ’› When did you last give yourself an afternoon with no agenda?

Hunterdon Medical Center earned its MAGNET designa Hunterdon Medical Center earned its MAGNET designation for nursing excellence, and one detail from that journey still moves me.

Years ago, I had the privilege of working with the leadership team in the Patient Care Division. We explored the assumptions leaders carried about themselves, the dreams they held, and the obstacles, regrets, triggers, and frustrations that quietly shaped the way they led. The intention was to help them become more insightful, more resilient, and more capable of creating an environment where others could thrive.

Then something beautiful happened. Directors began bringing the work to their teams. Some went on to become coaches themselves, and others began setting intentions with their staff each morning. The work rippled outward.

Several years later, surveyors spent three days observing and interviewing staff throughout the hospital as part of the MAGNET process. Linda, the hospital’s former Chief Nursing Officer, shared what they told her:

β€œπ‘Œπ‘œπ‘’π‘Ÿ π‘›π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘ π‘’π‘  π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘’ π‘ π‘œ π‘—π‘œπ‘¦π‘“π‘’π‘™. π‘Šπ‘’ π‘›π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘šπ‘Žπ‘™π‘™π‘¦ π‘‘π‘œ π‘›π‘œπ‘‘ 𝑀𝑖𝑑𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 π‘‘β„Žπ‘–π‘  𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙 π‘œπ‘“ π‘—π‘œπ‘¦.”

Another surveyor said:

β€œπΌ π‘€π‘œπ‘’π‘™π‘‘ π‘”π‘œ π‘π‘Žπ‘π‘˜ π‘‘π‘œ π‘€π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘˜ 𝑖𝑛 π‘Ž β„Žπ‘’π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘‘π‘π‘’π‘Žπ‘‘ 𝑖𝑓 𝐼 π‘π‘œπ‘’π‘™π‘‘ π‘€π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘˜ 𝑖𝑛 π‘Ž π‘π‘’π‘™π‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘’ π‘™π‘–π‘˜π‘’ π‘‘β„Žπ‘–π‘ .”

Linda recently shared this reflection with me:

β€œπ·π‘Ÿ. π‘€π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘–π‘Ž π‘π‘’π‘šπ‘’π‘‘β„Ž π‘€π‘Žπ‘  π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘π‘–π‘£π‘œπ‘‘π‘Žπ‘™ β„Žπ‘’π‘šπ‘Žπ‘› π‘€β„Žπ‘œ π‘ β„Žπ‘œπ‘€π‘’π‘‘ 𝑒𝑠 π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘”π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘›π‘’π‘ π‘  𝑀𝑒 π‘Žπ‘™π‘™ β„Žπ‘Žπ‘‘ 𝑖𝑛 𝑒𝑠.”

I am deeply touched by those words because I believe leadership is not simply about becoming better at what we do. It is about becoming more aware of who we are while we are doing it. When leaders bring greater clarity, humanity, and resilience to the way they lead, they do more than change their own experience. They create the conditions in which others can flourish.

That is how culture changes.

Testimonial shared by Linda R., former Chief Nursing Officer, Hunterdon Medical Center

What would shift in your workplace if the leaders around you became more aware of who they are while they lead?

There is something quietly draining high achievers There is something quietly draining high achievers, and I call it busyholism.

It is the habit of keeping yourself so busy that you never have time to think about what your life is up to, or what you truly want to create beyond the next achievement and the next one after that.

It can be genuinely enjoyable, too. As a psychologist, I can tell you that every time we succeed at something, our brain gives us a small shot of dopamine, and that energizer can keep us going long past the point where we should have paused.

There are two other traps that go along with it.

The first is keeping the mind on business at all times, which means missing the simple pleasure of sitting down with a friend over lunch instead of sending a quick text.

The second is not getting enough rest. When you are running on five or six hours of sleep, lifting yourself up with caffeine during the day and winding down with a few glasses of wine at night, you are medicating your brain instead of allowing it to replenish.

Success that costs you your clarity, your relationships, and your rest is not the success you set out to create.

I would love for you to watch the reel and let me know what you think. Then go call a friend and invite them to lunch.

Would you be willing to pause long enough to ask what you truly want?

There is a kind of knowing that does not come from There is a kind of knowing that does not come from analysis. It comes from stillness.

I have always loved art. I love traveling, experiencing new places, and discovering what someone else has imagined and brought into the world.

I have noticed something about those moments.

When I slow down long enough to really look, I become present. The mental noise quiets. The lists, decisions, responsibilities, and questions that can fill a day move into the background for a little while.

There is simply this moment.

We often approach clarity as though it is something we have to figure out. We analyze. We make lists. We consider every possible outcome.

But some of our clearest knowing comes when we create enough space to hear ourselves again.

The same is true of our dreams.

A dream does not always arrive as a perfectly articulated goal with a plan attached to it. Sometimes it begins as a feeling. A curiosity. Something beautiful that catches your attention. An experience that makes you feel more alive.

The invitation is to notice.

What has your attention right now?

Not what you think you should want. Not what makes the most sense on paper.

There may be more clarity there than you realize.

I have always loved to travel. Not simply for the I have always loved to travel. Not simply for the new places, but for what happens inside me when I encounter something I have not seen before.

A work of art that stops me mid step.
A different culture that asks me to set down my assumptions.
A piece of history that reminds me how small my own timeline really is.
A story that invites me to stay a little longer than I planned to.

There is something wonderful about being reminded that the world is so much larger than the routines we build for ourselves.

When I travel, I try to leave room for curiosity. To notice what catches my attention instead of rushing past it. To ask myself, what is here for me to see that I might otherwise miss?

I have come to believe we can bring that same quality of attention into our everyday lives.

So much of life becomes familiar. We know our routines, our responsibilities, and the stories we tell ourselves about what is possible for us. Curiosity interrupts that certainty. It gives us a chance to look again at what we thought we already understood.

Sometimes a new perspective does not require changing our entire life. It only requires being willing to see something familiar with fresh eyes.

That is one of the gifts travel keeps giving me. And I wonder if the real invitation is not only to travel to new places, but to remain someone who is willing to experience something new, wherever we are.

What have you experienced recently that made you stop, look, or think differently?
